Belt, Drum & Orbital Sander Basics

Belt, Drum & Orbital Sander Basics

Date posted: 10 November 2011

Given the different types of sanders available for hire, it's essential to select the correct one for the job in question.

While using a sander takes the effort out having to use elbow grease and manually sanding with sandpaper,  you still need to follow some basic rules when deciding what sander to use and also how to use it correctly to achieve the correct results.

Different sanders have different motions when sanding, and the three basic methods they use need to be considered when you rent a sander.

Orbital Sanding Machines

Points to note when you hire an Orbital Sander is that they use the whole plate to move in small circular motions causing the wood grain to move in a similar fashion.

Being the most common type of Sander, the Orbital Sander is available in many different sizes using either a rectangular, round or square plate.  Being ideal for many DIY tasks, the Orbital Sander can be used to prepare walls for painting or to assist with refinishing furniture.

An advantage of using an orbital sander is that you don’t need to worry about which direction the wood grain is when using it.

Belt Sanders

Alternatively, you can hire a Belt Sander which uses drive pulley systems to sand. These are usually up to 4 inches wide with different sander paper grain available it offers the flexibly of being used for many various tasks. The belts typically travel at speeds of upwards of 1,300 ft per second and can make light work of sanding although, it’s harder to get a good finish as using an orbital sander. On the plus side though, you tend to be able to sand faster with this type of sander although you need to make sure you sand with the grain and not against it otherwise you are likely to get scuffs in the wood.

Drum Sanders

If you are looking to sand areas of floor space, then you need to hire a floor sander which uses a large rotating drum. These are ideal for sanding wooden floors and doing large areas such as sanding lounges, large hallways.  Drum sanders are used in conjunction with Floor edging sanders as these are used for getting into the tight spaces where a drum sander cannot reach. Normally you can hire a floor edging sander as part of a package with a drum sander or on it own.
