Hedge Trimming Tips

When is the best time to trim a hedge? This depends on the type of hedge:

Yew: Trim once a year in either August or September. Hard prune it in April, if required.
Privet: Trim at least twice between May and August, and if necessary hard prune it in April. The more frequently you trim it, the easier it will be to follow the original line / shape.
Leyland Cypress / Lawsons Cypress: Trim the hedge in April, July and then late August, but don't cut it back into the brown growth.
Beech: Avoid trimming beech too early - try to wait until August. Hard prune during the winter if necessary.
Laurel: Trim in either July or August and remove any damaged leaves by hand or they will turn brown. Laurel can be cut back hard in springtime.
Hawthorn: Trim in June or July then a second time in August to create a more dense surface. Hard prune in winter if necessary.
Holly: Trim holly in August (or earlier if you need to keep a neat line). Hard prune in spring if required.
Escallonia: Trim escallonia in May and late August if it is a formal hedge, or leave until June (after flowering) if it is an informal hedge. Hard prune in spring if necessary.
