How to unblock a drain

Date posted: 5 September 2011

Strong smells, lost water pressure and flooding problems are all common symptoms of a blocked drain. Whether you’ve got a blocked drain at home or in your workplace, it’s easier than you think to rectify the problem yourself.

Best at hire have compiled a straight forward, 3-step process to unblocking your drain - making easy work of this unpleasant problem.

  1. Prepare

First thing’s first - protect yourself by using tough PVC gloves that you can dispose of afterwards. Make sure you have the manhole keys ready to address to blockage head-on.

  2. Get to the blockage

If you’re working in low light conditions, hire a compact drain camera or floodlighting to be able to see what you’re doing. Using drain rods, (you can screw multiple sections of drain rod together to create your bespoke drain rod) you will be able to get to the blockage.

  3. Get rid of the blockage

Requiring various amounts of elbow grease, once you have reached the blockage, manually force the drain rod through to loosen up dirt or residue that has built up. Use water to encourage any loosened debris to flush through.Well done -you have cleared your blocked drain!

Awkward blocked drains

To access awkward pipes and drains that hold blockages in drains or gulley junctions, a manual drain cleaner may be required. This is used by inserting the ‘cutting head’ of the tool into the blocked drain and simply unwinding the metal tubing, continuing to push against the blocked area until it’s loosened and removed.

Another alternative is to use a petrol powered jet hose - for really stubborn blockages. The high pressure emitted from this equipment makes it ideal for clearing thick blockages and is simple to operate.
