Stains: Removing Vomit from your Carpet

Date posted: 29 November 2016

Vomit is obviously very varied in terms of its colour and contents, but regardless of that you will need to clean it up as quickly as possible if you want to achieve the best results – avoiding a long-term stain and an unpleasant odour.

If you follow these steps you should successfully remove the stain from your carpet:

  1. Scrape up and remove as much of the vomit as possible from your carpet without pushing it deeper into the carpet fibres, or spreading the stain outwards.
  2. Sprinkle an absorbent powder such as bicarbonate of soda or baking soda onto the stained area. Leave for about 15 minutes.
  3. Vacuum up the powder, which will have absorbed some of the liquid from the vomit.
  4. If there is still some liquid remaining, repeat step 3 until no more liquid is being absorbed by the bicarbonate of soda or baking soda powder.
  5. For any vomit that is still on the carpet, use a clean cloth and blot at it with a dry-cleaning solvent such as the K2R Stain Remover Spray. Before using it on the stain, test it out on a discreet area of carpet to make sure it doesn't cause any colour fading or damage to the fibres.
  6. Blot at the stain until the solvent is absorbed.
  7. If necessary repeat steps 5 and 6 until the vomit stain has completely disappeared from your carpet.

Stubborn vomit stains

  1. If the steps above do not achieve perfect results you could try mixing a different cleaning solution containing two cups of cool water mixed with one tablespoon of washing up liquid.
  2. Apply a small amount of the solution.
  3. Blot the stain gently using a clean cloth until the liquid is absorbed and the stain has disappeared.
  4. Use a bit of cold water on a clean cloth to blot the area, removing any leftover cleaning solution.
  5. Blot the carpet dry.
  6. The same steps can be taken if you need to remove a vomit stain from an item of upholstery.
