How to Remove Urine from your Carpets and Upholsteries

Date posted: 24 November 2016

It's important to clean up urine from your carpet as thoroughly as possible in order to avoid an unpleasant smell lingering, as well as an unsightly stain. Act as soon as you spot the problem because the quicker you can deal with the patch of urine the better the results will be.

We suggest you try the following:

  1. Start by blotting up the urine using clean cloths or kitchen paper. Avoid spreading the stain any further, or pushing it deeper into the carpet and underlay.

  2. Mix up a solution of two cups of cool water with one tablespoon of washing up liquid and one tablespoon of white vinegar.

  3. Use this solution on a clean cloth to blot at the urine stain until all excess urine is absorbed.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the urine appears to have been completely removed (this can be difficult to judge because urine often doesn't have a very bold colour, so it is best to use a clean, white cloth so that you can repeatedly check the colour of the liquid you are absorbing to see if there are still any signs of urine).

  5. If the stain has gone, use a clean cloth with a little bit of cold water to blot the entire area, removing any residual cleaning solution.

  6. Blot dry.

The same steps can be taken if you need to remove a urine stain from an item of upholstery.

Stubborn urine stains

If you have tried the steps above but are still left with a stubborn urine stain, use an eye dropper or a cotton bud to apply a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide to the stain, followed by a few drops of ammonia. It is important, however, to test both the hydrogen peroxide and the ammonia on an inconspicuous area of carpet before using it to work on the stain. On some materials , these can cause damage to the carpet fibres.

Once the stain has gone, take a clean cloth and a little bit of cold water then blot the whole area of carpet to remove any leftover cleaning solution.
