How to Remove a Rust Stain from your Carpet

Date posted: 24 November 2016

Rust stains will come out of carpets, both natural and synthetic – and usually you can achieve good results with some readily-available household ingredients.

Try following these steps to remove a rust stain:

  1. Gently scrape up any visible rust from the carpet fibres using a blunt knife.

  2. Find a clean, white cloth and soak it in white vinegar then wring it out.  Some people also recommend adding a little lemon juice.

  3. Sprinkle the rust stain with some salt, then lay the white vinegar-soaked cloth over the stain area.

  4. Leave for 25 to 30 minutes.

  5. Reapply salt and then the white vinegar soaked cloth, repeating steps 2 & 3 until the stain has disappeared.

  6. Use a clean cloth with a small amount of cold water to dab at the area again, removing any leftover vinegar.

  7. Leave the area to dry and then vacuum up any remaining salt.

If this doesn't completely remove a particularly stubborn rust stain, you could consider using a shop-bought commercial rust remover, available from DIY stores.

You can follow the same steps if you need to remove a rust stain from an item of upholstery.
