How to Remove Coffee Stains from Carpets and Upholsteries

Date posted: 21 November 2016

Coffee is one of the most commonly spilt drinks in the home, and it can leave a visible stain on your carpet or upholstery if you don't clean it properly.

You can take the following simple steps to prevent a coffee stain:

  1. Blot up the spilt coffee using a clean, white cloth, working inwards to avoid spreading the stain over an even larger area. Don't rub or scrub the carpet.

  2. Mix up one tablespoon of washing up liquid with two cups of cool water.  Some people also recommend adding one tablespoon of white vinegar.

  3. Use a clean cloth dipped in a small amount of this soap solution to gently sponge the stain. Use as little of the solution as possible to prevent over-wetting the carpet.

  4. Blot up the liquid.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the coffee stain has disappeared.

  6. Finish with some cold water and another clean, white cloth to gently sponge the area and remove any remaining cleaning solution.

  7. Blot the area dry.

The same process applies if you need to remove a coffee stain from an item of upholstery.
