Concrete Laying Tools
For concrete laying tools , visit Best at hire, your national tool hire centre.
Both tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts use concrete for a whole host of building projects, – from making a new driveway to creating the foundations for a building.
It is a relatively straightforward building material to use, but the results are far better when you have the right tools and equipment to hand.
One of the most important steps in the process is concrete compaction. Without proper compaction your concrete will never achieve its potential in terms of strength or durability. Our range of concrete poker hire products – including electric and vibrating poker hire – will help you to achieve thorough compaction for professional results.
How to use a concrete poker
Thorough compaction involves the removal of air bubbles. The most effective means of doing this is by using a highly efficient vibrating poker. Remember, as a rule concrete should be poured in layers no more than 450mm deep,- and each layer must be vibrated thoroughly before the next layer can be placed. This ensures air is eliminated rather than getting trapped under a layer that hasn't been compacted properly. Also, the next layer must be vibrated before the previous layer has hardened. The poker should be inserted vertically into the first layer by about 100mm to ensure a good bond between the two layers.
Each time you insert the poker, an area around it will be compacted, but the size of this area depends on several factors (e.g. size of the poker; its frequency and amplitude; its distance from the form; etc). Look at the concrete's surface around the poker to work out the size of the 'compaction circle'. Insert the poker at intervals so that these circles overlap to ensure thorough compaction across the entire concrete slab.
Each time, withdraw the poker slowly and vertically to allow the void left by the poker to fill up. If you drag the tool through the concrete it could cause pockets of air to get trapped inside. It is also important to avoid over-vibrating – if you hold the poker in place for too long it can cause the aggregate, sand and cement to separate and will compromise the strength of the concrete.
