Concrete and Compaction Tools Edinburgh

For concrete and compaction tools visit Best at hire, your tool hire depot in Edinburgh.

Come to us for concrete and compaction equipment hire for domestic or trade settings – and rent all the tools you need to do a professional job.

From cement and concrete mixer hire to vibrating plates, wacker plate hire and many other tools for working with concrete, we can supply everything you need.

Preparation for pouring concrete

Before you can mix and pour concrete, first you need to prepare the area properly:

  1. Clear the area of any obstructions such as grass, stones, plants or old concrete, leaving just raw earth.
  2. Create a subbase - the 'foundation' on which the concrete will be poured. The best way to do this is by hiring equipment such as a plate compactor or vibration plates to compact the earth. Sometimes you can get away with just compacted soil as the subbase, but often you will need to lay and compact stone to create a more stable subbase, usually about 4-8 inches thick as a minimum.
  3. Make a form (e.g. using wood) around the pouring site's perimeter.
  4. Add wire mesh in your form if your concrete needs to bear heavy loads.
  5. Mix the ingredients for concrete in your concrete mixer using as little water as possible because a drier mix is less prone to cracks.

Pouring, sealing & curing the concrete

  1. Pour the concrete into your form, spread it with shovels and concrete rakes, then screed the surface to flatten it.
  2. Float the newly-screeded surface.
  3. Create texture (for traction) by sweeping a soft broom across the surface.
  4. Seal and cure the concrete. You can cure it by creating a moisture-retaining barrier on the surface, either by laying plastic sheet over it, or using a chemical curing compound.
  5. Protect the new concrete from any severe weather conditions for a minimum of three days, but preferably for a week.
