Mixing & curing concrete

If you are new concrete laying, it is vital to understand the relationship between water and concrete: when you are mixing concrete initially, too much water will make it prone to cracking – whereas later when you are curing concrete, it actually needs water to prevent it from cracking. The strength of fresh concrete increases quickly during the curing process, then this strengthening slows but continues -- just as long as the concrete has water. This is why a chemical curing agent or plastic sheet will help the curing process by retaining more moisture and slowing down the drying process. If you use sheeting, you can pull the plastic back periodically to spray the concrete with a garden hose before laying the plastic back down again, ensuring the concrete it kept wet as it slowly cures. Also, if you plan to pour further concrete later to bond with the cured concrete, moisten the cured surface first before adding fresh on top as this prevents a"cold joint" (where the joint can separate).

Understanding the importance of compaction

Another critical area of knowledge you will need is around compaction – of the subgrade (the earth underneath your concrete) and the subbase (e..g. the compacted soil, sand, stones, etc that are often placed on top of the subgrade). We can supply wacker plate hire to help you achieve proper compaction for a strong concrete foundation – with lightweight, medium duty and heavy duty options to suit different scenarios.
