Laying a concrete floor

If you have not worked with concrete much in the past, you will need to do a bit of research before embarking on your first concreting project. Many of our domestic customers have decided to save money by going it alone in creating a simple garden path or shed foundation – and they come to us to get hold of all the right equipment.

There are some fundamental steps required when you are pouring concrete, including:

  • Getting the area of ground ready by clearing away any debris such as rocks or plants to leave smooth earth. Ensuring this earth (the subgrade) is level and compacted.
  • Creating a suitable subbase on which to pour the concrete. For lighter structures the subbase may simply be the subgrade, but for heavier structures you may need to use four to eight inches of stone, which will require compacting. If you choose fine grade stone it will compact more easily than the cheaper open-grade stone, but will cost more too. You can hire a plate compactor to help you with this task.
  • Build a form around the perimeter of the pouring area, using planks of wood. These keep the concrete in place as it sets. The addition of some wire mesh / rebar will provide greater stability for concrete that will take heavy loads (e.g. vehicles).
  • Mix the concrete ingredients. You can hire a a small electric cement mixer or a larger Belle mixer, depending on the quantity of concrete you require. Do not add more water than necessary or the concrete will be weakened.
  • Pour the concrete into the form and distribute it evenly using concrete trowels or rakes. Screed the top surface then float it to further compact the concrete. Again, we can supply all the necessary tools, including concrete floats.
  • Mark the surface with a brush to create some traction if you are going to be walking or driving on the concrete once it is dry.
  • Cure the concrete immediately to prevent it drying too quickly and potentially cracking by covering the surface with a moisture-retaining barrier such as plastic sheeting or a special chemical curing compound.
  • Protect the new concrete from any extreme temperatures or weather for a week while it gets up to full strength.
